STEPHEN OLIVER

In 2007. I designed a new facility for MofAC at 13 Brown Street, in the City of Portland’s Arts District.  The project also included building custom cabinetry for the museum and coordinating design elements created and contributed by artists from the museum’s Black Artists Forum Initiative. The museum was small but had an expansive collection of African artifacts, offering unique cultural insight in a State that is one of the least diverse but also growing in numbers of African immigrants.

The interior was divided up angularly into galleries for rotating exhibits, permeant collection, and classroom/program space. The angles of the space also evoked a ship and created a corner niche for an alter. The museum has been in the process of moving to new locations.
